Landscape/regeneration of industrial region
Model for landscape-led regional renewal
IBA Emscher Park (1989–99) regenerated the declining Ruhr coalfield not by erasing its industry but by reusing it: derelict steelworks and collieries became parks, museums, and venues, woven into a vast regional landscape framework along the restored Emscher river.
IBA Emscher Park pioneered landscape-led, regional post-industrial regeneration, transforming a rustbelt into a cultural landscape. It reframed industrial heritage as an asset and set the template for landscape urbanism at regional scale.
