Description

The redevelopment of Malmö's Western Harbour, launched with the Bo01 European housing exposition of 2001 on former Kockums shipyard land, planned by the City of Malmö with E.ON and a large roster of architects. Bo01 combined a dense, wind-sheltered low- and mid-rise fabric of varied plots with a locally sourced renewable energy system, ecological stormwater handling and a green-space quality points system, and subsequent phases extended the district across the harbour.

Significance

Bo01 became the iconic European eco-district, demonstrating that sustainability targets, architectural variety and market housing could be delivered together on contaminated industrial land. It marked Malmö's transition from shipbuilding city to knowledge city and has shaped two decades of eco-district practice and criticism, including questions about its affluent resident profile and the gap between demonstration projects and citywide transformation.
