Description
Designated in 1980 and master-planned through 2010, Shenzhen transformed from fishing villages into a megacity of millions as China's first Special Economic Zone, built at extraordinary speed on a linear, corridor-based structure as the laboratory of market reform.
Significance
Shenzhen is the emblem of state-capitalist, hyper-speed Chinese urbanization — a city of over ten million built within a generation. It embodies the scale, ambition, and velocity of contemporary Chinese city-making.

Realised far beyond expectations: Shenzhen grew from a fishing-and-market town into a megacity of many millions, vastly exceeding all early forecasts.
Critique
Explosive growth far outran the plan, producing severe congestion, environmental strain and reliance on a large migrant underclass.
